Wright Flyer Memorial

Wright Flyer Memorial

The HISTORY OF THE 1909 WRIGHT FLYER MEMORIAL
THE FIRST MILITARY AIRPLANE
  • In late 2001 the ASC Commander and senior staff decided to pursue the placement of a full scale replica of the 1909 Flyer at the renovated Gate 1B.
  • The Flyer would serve as the entry to the “Field of Dreams”, an array of aircraft models positioned in front of the Acquisition Management Complex. It would also commemorate the 100th anniversary of powered flight in 2003.
  • The bulk of the funding for the Flyer was to come via a fund raising project involving the sale of commemorative brick pavers to current and former base personnel. After the project commenced, corporate support was added.
  • To insure the Flyer was in place for the Dayton, 2003, 100th anniversary of powered flight celebration, the courtyard and statues of Orville and Wilbur needed to be funded via the brick sales.
  • The Wright Memorial Chapter of the Air Force Association was asked by the ASC Commander to be the financial conduit for contributions.
  • The role of the AFA grew as they became deeply involved in the corporate fund raising drive, contracting with the architect, working with the sculptor and paying the bills.
  • The AFA successfully raised the funds necessary to have the courtyard in place for an August 2003 ribbon cutting. The courtyard was officially accepted as a gift by the Secretary of the Air Force.
  • Fund raising continued and contracts were let for bronze statues of the Wright Brothers. The statues were placed at the Memorial in May 2005; Orville seated in the aircraft and Wilbur standing on the ground.
  • The AFA project’s final major contribution was in 2015; the placement of a monument commemorating Lt Benjamin Foulois, whose test flight with Orville Wright led to the purchase of the world’s first military airplane.
  • The Wright Memorial Chapter and Wright Patterson Air Force Base salutes the ceaseless fund raising efforts of Mr. Sam Greenwood, USAF SES Retired and Chairman of The Greentree Group for making the memorial possible.
